A New Centre
A brand new urban square linking the Broadway with the new residential streets and acting as a focal point for the whole community. Short-stay car parking, shops and other facilities will be provided.
Traffic and Transport Improvements
The gyratory system will be removed, through traffic will be confined to the A5 with improvements to the junctions to ease congestion and right turns. A new drop off point and taxi rank at the station will be provided and a pedestrian route will be enhanced to better connect the station. York Park will be redesigned and relocated to create a safe environment in which to play and socialise.
Environmental Improvements
Landscaped green corridors will link the beauty of the Welsh Harp through the new residential areas up to the heart of West Hendon. We will work with Natural England and local conservation groups to retain and enhance the areas natural features. This could include improving water filtration, the managing of coppicing of some willows, creation of new ponds for amphibians and the provision of new hides. We will create better access around the Harp, this will include a new pedestrian bridge across the Silk Stream giving improved access to the facilities at West Hendon Playing fields and more opportunities to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Welsh Harp as a site of special scientific interest. 10% of the energy for the new West Hendon will come from renewable sources.
